Countdown to Halloween Advent Blocks https://www.champagneandsugarplums.com/countdown-to-halloween-advent-blocks/ Sat, 12 Aug 2023 19:12:00 +0000 http://192.168.0.28:8010/?p=1718 Advent calendars are usually reserved for Christmas but these distressed countdown to Halloween Advent Blocks are a fun way to keep track of how many days are left until trick or treating. It’s also a fun way to help keep track of how many days are left to finish up costumes and pick up candy for the big night. Speaking of October 31, get your porch ready for little ghosts and ghouls with our Creepy Spider Planter. Some wood blocks, paint and sandpaper and you are ready to create! This blog post may contain affiliate links. What does that mean? We may get a small commission if you make a purchase using our links, which helps us to keep posting new holiday content every week. What You’ll Need: Wood blocks Acrylic paints Small plastic skulls Paint pen Sandpaper Paint brushes Glue Paint two square blocks in a solid colour and then set aside to dry completely. We chose a bright green as it gives a fabulous pop of colour underneath the black overlay. Paint three small plastic skulls black and then let dry. While the skulls are drying, paint black on the two blocks to cover the green and let dry. Paint the base block black and then set aside to dry. Use some gold paint to dry brush over the skulls. Dry brushing is a painting technique where a dry paint brush is used with a minimal amount of paint. The result is brush strokes that have a scratchy look that lacks the smooth appearance regular painting commonly has. Use sandpaper or a sanding block to remove some of the black paint to reveal the green underneath, therefore giving them a distressed look. Stencil numbers onto the Halloween blocks. One block should have numbers 0 through 5 and the second should have 1,2,3 and 0, so every day in the calendar can be read. On the base block, write ‘Days Til Halloween’ with the paint pen or stencil. Lastly, glue the skulls to the side of the base in a tower. Let the countdown begin – we hope you have fun making these Halloween Advent Blocks – happy crafting!

Rustic Rainbow St. Patrick’s Day Lucky Signboard https://www.champagneandsugarplums.com/rustic-rainbow-st-patricks-day-lucky-signboard/ Mon, 18 Jan 2021 13:42:00 +0000 http://192.168.0.28:8010/?p=1137 It’s time to get your green on! Introduce some Irish cheer into your home during this winter. We don’t know how much winter we can take, so it’s time to bring in some colour and cheer.  Luckily, this lucky signboard might just be enough to ward off those winter blues with traditional St. Patty’s green and a subtle rainbow touch. This blog post may contain affiliate links. What does that mean? We may get a small commission if you make a purchase using our links, which helps us to keep posting new holiday content every week. We painted our plank white, so the green would stand out better than would would against the natural wood. To give depth, we painted the plank green first and then a layer of white over-top. This way, we could sand away some of the white paint to give the sign a rustic, weathered look. There are a few ways to make the letters, free-hand like we did, stencils, or a Cricut machine. Let’s get sham-rockin and let greens, golds and rainbows dominate your decorations this March. What you’ll need: Wood plaque Scrapbook paper in green patterns Mod Podge and foam brush Scissors Ruler, stencil or Cricut machine Embroidery thread in a rainbow of colours Green and white acrylic paint Sandpaper Paint your plaque green. When this has completely dried, paint over the green with white paint. Be sure to let all of the paint layers dry completely before moving onto the next steps. If you don’t, the colours will smear together. After the white paint is dry, use the sandpaper to distress the plaque by rubbing away the white paint around the edges of the plaque. Cut out your letters while the paint layers dry. Use a stencil, Cricut machine or a ruler. Maybe try adding a second layer to add depth and flare. Use Mod Podge to attach the letters to the plaque. Seal them by applying a layer of the glue over the top of the letters as well. Cut lengths of various coloured embroidery thread or twine. Tie a knot in the middle and wrap them around one edge of the plaque, securing the threads at the back. What do you think of your lucky signboard? We would love to see your take on it, please share with us in the comments. Happy crafting! For another awesome St. Patrick’s Day decoration certainly check out our Clover Chair Sashes.

Day of the Dead Sugar Skulls Plaques for Halloween https://www.champagneandsugarplums.com/day-of-the-dead-sugar-skulls-plaques-for-halloween/ Mon, 06 Jul 2020 22:19:52 +0000 http://192.168.0.28:8010/?p=1434 Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead), the Mexican celebration of life is coming up on November 2. This holiday is marked by families celebrating the memory of their loved ones with dancing, costumes and eating sugar skull candies. Our Day of the Dead sugar skulls are so much fun make. This decoration works equally well for Halloween, a Day of the Dead party, or even a themed wedding. This blog post may contain affiliate links. What does that mean? We may get a small commission if you make a purchase using our links, which helps us to keep posting new holiday content every week. What You’ll Need: Two wooden plaques Two paper skulls Acrylic paints A felt mustache Mod Podge Foam brush Paint brushes White tulle Colourful small silk or ribbon flowers Glue gun and sticks Scissors Two sheets of scrapbook paper A bow tie Paint the edges of the plaques with the colour of your choice. Trace the shape of the plaque onto scrapbook paper and then cut out the tracing. Glue the paper onto the front of the plaques, using a layer of Mod Podge both under and on top of the paper to seal it. Paint the skulls completely white and then let dry. Decorate the sugar skulls. We suggest starting with the black and using it to blacken the eyes and nose. When you are happy with the designs, glue the skulls onto the plaques. Embellish the bride sugar skull with a flower tiara and tulle veil. To make the veil, cut three strips of tulle about six inches long and then glue in separate layers to the top of the skull, bunching the glued edge together to give the tulle volume. Then glue a flower crown on top of the tulle. Embellish the groom skull with a mustache and bow tie. We hope you love decorating with these sugar skulls, happy crafting! For more skull-inspired Halloween decorations check out our Glam Pastel Skull or try an awesome Halloween recipe like our Creepy Quesadillas.

Sugar skulls being embellished with tulle and flowers by Champagne and Sugarplums

Painted Holiday Trees – With Glitter Twinkle Lights https://www.champagneandsugarplums.com/painted-holiday-trees-with-glitter-twinkle-lights/ Mon, 04 May 2020 23:00:10 +0000 http://192.168.0.28:8010/?p=1385 Now is the time to start putting up Christmas decorations, both inside and outside the house. Of course, we feel that every year needs a new addition. Who are we kidding, it’ll be more than one new addition, lol. After all, what’s Christmas without a little DIY??  The tricky thing is deciding what to make, so we’re here to bring you inspiration. This week we’re breaking out our paints for this naturally beautiful winter scene, with glitter as the cherry on top, which shimmers and shines to create the illusion of tiny glitter twinkle lights. We know glitter can be messy, but we promise, adding it is 100% worth it. What You’ll Need: Three wood boards or canvas Acrylic paint in white, blue and light and dark green Flat tipped paint brush Pointed tip paint brush Foam brush Mod Podge or white glue White/Translucent glitter Hot glue gun and sticks Pencil Sketch out a basic outline of the trees and snow, then start by painting the snow banks in with white paint. Paint in the trees, starting with light green paint. Make a thin line as the centre of your tree and then add tree branches by tapping the flat tipped brush onto the board. Be sure to tap the brush in different directions to vary the shapes and make the trees wider at the bottoms, thinning out as you get to the top. Paint over the light green paint with dark green to add dimension to the trees. Use the same dabbing technique with the white paint to add snow. Use blue paint to add shadows under the trees. To achieve a softer look, use water to thin the blue paint a little bit. Don’t be afraid to go over the blue with some water and white paint if the blue is too dark or too strong. Add some Mod Podge or white glue with the sponge on top of the snow on the trees. Dab glitter onto the wet glue, don’t be afraid to be generous with the glitter! Using the point tip brush make dots in the background for snowflakes. The glitter twinkle lights are ready to be added to your holiday decorations or given away as a gift, happy crafting!
