We recently shared our Macrame Plant Hanger Tutorial and we loved it so much we decided to create a pattern for Halloween or Thanksgiving! It can work for either occasion. This easy macrame pattern is guaranteed to get you hooked on this classic art form.

This project is very simple and totally fun. The best part is you can get all the materials at your local dollar store. You can use a foam pumpkin or real – then all you need is some strong cotton yarn or thin cord.  A glue gun and scissors are also needed. This craft does take some time to finish but once you get a good flow going, your knots will be done in no time.

What do you need to make a Macrame Pumpkin Cover?

• Cotton yarn or cord
• Foam or real pumpkin
• Hot glue gun with glue sticks
• Scissors

How to Make a Macrame Pumpkin Cover – Macrame Pumpkin Wrap

Firstly, cut a long single piece of string – the length will depend on the size of your pumpkin.  You basically need it to go around the top of your pumpkin stump. This will act as the centre “loop”.

Secondly, cut several long lengths of string. Be sure to cut them long, making the knots will take up some of the length. We cut ours to about 36 inches long. Double each strand.

Attach the long lengths of string to the original length of string (the one that will become the centre loop). A simple loop around is all that is needed to being the macrame.

Once all of the strings are looped around, tie the original length together to form the loop.  

Lay your circle on the table and begin making your square knots. We will use this simple knot for the whole cover.  You may find it easier to work on the table or maybe directly on the pumpkin – do whatever feels best for you.

Begin by taking two of the looped strings and splitting them into four equal parts, two strings per group. Cross the far left strings over the middle two and under the far right. Then, bring the far right up under the middle two strings and through the hole created by the first step. Gently pull the strings together to form a knot. See the picture for a visual step by step.

Repeat this step across the entire loop, then again until there are about three layers of knots.

You’re Almost Finished Your New Macrame Pumpkin Cover!

This craft looks best if the knots cover at least half of the pumpkin and the tassels reach the table top.

When there are enough macrame knots tie the ends off using a simple knot.

Cut the extra string off.

Finally, separate the tassels to make them ‘puff’.

Crafters Tip: You can use your hot glue gun to attach the macrame pattern to the top of your foam/real pumpkin. This will keep it secure to the pumpkin, so it won’t slide around.

Halloween Party are so much fun! An excuse to get together with friends, eat fun themed food, enjoy some haunted music and most of all, dress up! We have seen witches, ghosts, pirates, ware wolves and even Homer Simpson pass through our Halloween parties. The effort you put into your costume can vary from year to year, depending on what life has thrown at you! If you’re feeling a little behind this year, don’t worry. We’ve go you covered!  

Let’s take a look at some Last Minute Halloween Costume Ideas

Spooky Black Cat

What you’ll need – Make-up is key for this one, spending extra time on creating a cat like face will go a long way.  You’ll also need some black clothes, and cat ears. Add some eyelashes too for extra flair.  

Scarecrow

What you’ll need – Some straw, plaid shirt, jeans, squares of plaid fabric, a straw hat, make-up, and to top this outfit off – a fake crow!

Clark Kent – Superman

What you’ll need – suit with a white dress shirt (preferably), a superman t-shirt, thick rimmed glasses.  Be sure to expose your superman suit at the right moment!

Little Miss Muffet

What you’ll need – a cute dress, an apron, make-up and a wig (if you like) and of certainly a spider friend.

Zombie

What you’ll need – a ton of make-up is absolutely needed to make this costume work well.  We’re talking fake skin, fillers and fake blood.  Add some old clothes that you don’t mind mucking up and you’re set!  

Skull 

What you’ll need – white face paint with some black make up should do the trick.  Add some colour if you like, but keeping the contrast here really makes the look ‘pop’.  Adding a scary accessory to your hair finishes this costume up perfectly.

And a few couples costumes!

Jack and Jill

What you’ll need -for Jack you’ll need a bloody head wrap made of some bandage material. A plaid shirt and some white bib overalls.  White will show the dirt and fake blood better since Jack has a fall and ‘breaks his crown’.  

For Jill a white apron with grass and dirt stains to show that she went “tumbling after.” Add some piggy tails and a tin bucket as a prop.  

Little Red Riding Hood and The Big Bad Wolf 

What you’ll need – the Big Bad Wolf will need some make up and some fake teeth. An outfit can simply be a dark coloured dress shirt and pants. You could tear the clothes to make the costume more authentic.

Little Red needs her signature red cloak. Give your couples costume a fun upgrade. Use make-up and a contact lens to achieve a scratch from the Big Bad Wolf.

• Miniature birdhouse
• Wood circle
• Paint
• Paper, silk or felt flowers

How do you make a Fun Kid’s Lucky Leprechaun House?

• Paint the birdhouse
• Paint the wood circle light brown
• Attach the birdhouse
• Draw on tiny footprints with a black marker (littles might need help with this part)
• Glue on flowers and other decorations
• Glue on gold pieces (golden sequins)

Easy to Follow Photo Tutorial!

First, paint the birdhouse. Since our helper is young he used his fingers to paint the birdhouse! Finger painting is a great activity to help develop fine motor skills. It’s fun to see what each child paints, how much detail they add and what colours they choose.

Next, paint the wood circle light brown. Set it aside to dry completely then attach the birdhouse using glue.

Draw tiny footprints onto the wooden base with a black marker. Littles may need help creating the footprints.

Then, glue on the flowers. Add as many as you or your child like!

Finally, glue on the gold pieces (gold sequins!)

What do you need to make a St. Patrick’s Day Home Decor?

• Wooden square
• Four small wooden hearts
• Paint – white, green
• Sandpaper
• Glue
• Green glitter
• Hot glue

How do you make a DIY Clover Hearts Home Decor?

First, paint a wooden square green. Set it aside to let it dry completely before beginning in the next step.

Next, paint a layer of white over the green. Set it aside to dry once more.

Using a fine sandpaper, sand the white paint to reveal the green underneath. Vary the pressure throughout the wooden square to create more or less green. The design is up to you!

Once the square is finished you can begin to decorate the small wooden hearts. Start by covering the hearts with glue.

Then, cover them in glitter! Be sure to press the glitter into the heart firmly.

Finally, glue the wooden, glittery hearts onto the square.

That’s it! This piece looks great on the mantel or on the table as a festive addition to your table setting. Enjoy!

• 12 inch round skewers
• Mini wooden labels
• Twine
• Permanent marker
• Beads – colours of popular vegetables/fruits and plants

How to Create Easy Garden Markers for Kids to Make

• Firstly, tie the wooden labels to the top of a round skewer using the twine. Tie them securely, a small amount of glue may be needed
• Secondly, thread some beads onto a piece of twine. Consider using orange with green beads on top for a carrot marker, red beads for tomatoes and so on.
• Lastly, attach the coloured beads to the each marker and write the corresponding plant onto the wooden label

Firstly, write the vegetables and fruits that you are going to grow onto the labels, a paint pen or permanent marker will do.

Secondly, wrap some twine around the end of the skewers, secure it with knots. Then, add the wooden labels.

Finally, thread some beads onto a piece of twine. Use orange with green beads on top for a carrot marker, red beads for tomatoes and so on.

Finding the materials for this Mother’s Day gift is easy and the project doesn’t take long to complete.  It can be tricky to wrap the wire around the the beads, but the finished pea pod pendant is well worth the effort.  We used a shiny black floral wire for our pod but you can easily use silver, gold or even green. Floral wire comes in plenty of colours and sizes.

How to make a Pea Pod Pendant, a Mother’s Day Gift Idea

What Do You Need to Make a Pea Pod Pedant?

• Floral wire
• Beads (any colour and number)
• Jump ring
• Long nose plier
• Side cutting plier

How to Make a Pea Pod Pedant

Firstly, using the long nose pliers, cut a straight piece of wire and create a loop at one end, thread your beads onto this straight piece and make a second loop on the opposite end to secure the beads in place.  

Secondly, wrap some wire around the beads to create the pod.  Start at one end make your way down to the bottom, making sure the beads are secure. To give the pod some character wrap the wire loosely and tightly against the beads, this will help give a “woven” appearance.

You can add small sparkle or letter beads to the top of the pendant (initials are perfect for personalization!)  To do this, use another small piece of wire and secure it to the top of the pod pendant, thread on the beads and fold the exposed tip to hold the beads in place.  

Finally, attach a jump ring to one end.  There you have it, a perfect pea pod pendant for Mother’ Day.  So easy to make and beautiful to give.

DIY Dollar Store Bottle Opener for the Cottage

What you’ll need:

• Beer opener
• False leaves
• Shells
• Twine
• Beads
• Hot glue gun with glue
• Sea dollar (optional)
• Good vibes plaque (optional)

This DIY bottle opener is super easy to make. Firstly, cut some twine into varying lengths – these will be what the decorations will attach to. The bottle opener, leaves and then the plaque are all tied onto the twine with some beads thrown in for flair. We glued the sand dollar and shells onto the twine to secure them.

Once you have all your twine lengths decorated, tie them all together at the top to secure them. This will also create the loop to hang it from.

The dollar store bottle opener that we found came with a magnet on the back to hang it on the fridge, BUT, it also works to hold the bottle caps!! Perfect for a hanging bottle opener!

Crafter Hack – attach a magnet to the back of the opener or plaque for an easy way to store caps, so perfect for an outdoor bottle opener!!

What you’ll need:

• Craft paper in white and/or brown
• Paint
• Sponge
• Washi tape
• Stamps
• Ink pad
• Snowflake ornament

This one is the easiest on the list as a black ink pad and a stamp are all you’re going to need.

No clean up needed here with strips of self-sticking washi tape, creating geometric lines is all you need to do for this paper.

By faaaaaaar and away the messiest of them all, but also the most fun! Dip your kiddos hands into paint (one colour at a time, let dry between colours if you can) and let them stamp them randomly all over the paper.

A super pretty design using a snowflake ornament as a stencil. Sponge paint all over and around the ornament, sponge on a highlight colour and then add hand painted accents. 

Create an abstract pattern from the tissue paper and then glue into place, simple and stunning.
