She’s amazing at both, and our babies have definitely benefited! Over the years, she’s made some really beautiful handmade pieces for us – like blankets, hats, booties, and sweaters that we really treasure. So, using Mum’s favourite hobby as inspiration, (though neither of us ever leant how to knit) we created some Lucky Green Balls for this St. Patrick’s Day. This blog post may contain affiliate links. These little decorations are super fun, and surprisingly soothing, to make. There are a few different ways to wrap yarn, and they’re all easy! We like the look of the circular method we used for our balls. But, all the methods really work great, plus they are so, so easy and really inexpensive to put together! Start with a dollop of glue on the top of one of the Styrofoam balls. This step is optional – but we found it helpful to add a pin to the yarn to hold it in place while the glue is still wet. Begin twirling the yarn tightly around itself, sticking it to the glue as you go. Try not to leave any gaps in the yarn. Add glue as you are wrapping to hold the yarn in place. Keep wrapping until the entire ball is covered and then snip the yarn off at the top circle. Wrapping the top of the ball will be a little more difficult, you will need to gently push the yarn to keep any gaps from forming as you go. Copy the same steps again with some white or cream yarn. And then again with another green yarn. This technique works equally well for both thinner and thicker yarns. To make our rainbow ball, use the exact same steps as the solid coloured balls. The difference here will be the transition between each colour. To do this, mark on the ball where you want each colour to end with a pen. Start at the top as usual, using the glue and wrapping the yarn. When you reach the first mark, cut off the yarn and glue the end to the ball. Start the next colour by layering the new colour overtop of the cut end (blue over purple in our example). Continue this technique with each colour to cover the entire ball. All done! Easiest Three Step Yarn Modern Christmas Tree Ever https://www.champagneandsugarplums.com/easiest-three-step-yarn-modern-christmas-tree-ever/ Wed, 13 May 2020 23:21:07 +0000 http://192.168.0.28:8010/?p=1640 This project may be the easiest, cheapest, quickest Christmas craft we’ve ever done…and have we a lot of awesome decorations that fit that category! (our vintage photo blocks are just one example) But this Three Step Yarn Modern Christmas actually takes less than 10 mins to make, costs about $10 and there are only three steps – total! We also love that it can pull double duty as a card holder. This blog post may contain affiliate links. What does that mean? We may get a small commission if you make a purchase using our links, which helps us to keep posting new holiday content every week. What You’ll Need: Yarn Command Hooks (mini size, value pack) Flat decorations (snowflakes, stars, circles etc) Scissors Measuring tape Useful but optional – laser pointer How to make your own Three Step Yarn Modern Christmas Tree: Find the centre of your wall or table – wherever you are making the tree. A laser pointer is useful but not necessary for this step. Attach one command hook to the wall to make the top of your tree, with the hook facing the ceiling. At the bottom on your tree (either at table height or the floor) measure how wide the tree will be. The closer to the ground you go, the wider the base of the tree will be. Decide how far apart you want the ‘branches’ to be (our tree was table height and we did them 6′ apart). Keep in mind that the bigger the tree, the more command hooks you will need. Stick the command hooks to the wall at your chosen intervals with the hooks facing the floor. Start the tree with the top hook, tying the yarn to the hook to secure. Wrap the yarn back and forth from the top hook to the bottom ones, looping back on itself each time. Tie another knot at the top hook when finished. We hope you love this quick modern Christmas tree as much as we do, happy crafting!

Hearts and Arrows Valentine’s Day Wreath https://www.champagneandsugarplums.com/yarn-felt-hearts-and-arrows-valentines-day-wreath/ Tue, 28 Apr 2020 23:19:22 +0000 http://192.168.0.28:8010/?p=1162 We love festive decor, especially festive outdoor decor! Having a festive, DIY Valentine’s Day Wreath on the front door is a special way to welcome visitors. We created this charming yarn and felt Valentine’s Day Wreath, and we are smitten with it! This blog post may contain affiliate links. What does that mean? We may get a small commission if you make a purchase using our links, which helps us to keep posting new holiday content every week. With Valentine’s Day around the corner, now is the perfect time to get started on this year’s lovely decorations. This wreath is easy to make, the perfect craft for a chilly day in front of the fire or when watching a movie. With minimum effort here comes maximum impact – this sweet wreath will make you and your guests feel the love! What You’ll Need: – An embroidery hoop or foam wreath base– Yarn in three colours– Felt in beige and light and dark pink– A straight-ish branch– Scissors– Hot Glue Gun– A small piece of ribbon or lace Firstly, tie the first colour of yarn around the hoop. Start wrapping the yarn around the hoop, keeping the loops tight against each other. Cover half of the hoop and then switch to the next colour. To do this, tie the two strings together and continue wrapping with tight loops, covering the tails as you go. Add as much of the accent colour as you like, we added a stripe every couple inches. Pop outside and find a neighborhood tree to lend you a branch. Clip off any twigs it may have. Cut out two matching hearts from the dark pink felt. I free-handed these hearts by folding the felt in half to make sure the heart was symmetrical, but you could also trace a wood shape, or use a stencil if you like. Glue the hearts onto the narrower end of the branch, one on top of the other to create an arrowhead. Halfway there… Repeat the heart steps, but draw half of a parallelogram instead. This will make the feathers, so glue these two pieces on the wider end of the branch. Tip: Only use glue next to the branch. Try not to get the on the edges of the ‘feathers’, it will make it easier to cut the ‘feathers’ in angled lines, about 1/4″ wide, all the way along the tail on both sides. Add a small bow on the accent yarn. This will finish the tail end nice and neatly. Loop a ribbon or some lace around the top of the wreath for hanging. If your using thin ribbon, you can simply tie the ends together to form a circle however, if you are using thicker ribbon or lace (like we did) you will need to glue the loop in place with some hot glue. Use some more glue to attach the arrow to the hoop. Then, use the same technique from earlier to cut out some different sized hearts in various colours. Attach them to the bottom of the Valentine’s Day Wreath. Your guests will LOVE coming over and knocking on your door. Happy crafting! Firstly, tie the first colour of yarn around the hoop.

Halfway there…

Repeat the heart steps, but draw half of a parallelogram instead.

Springtime Flower Pop Pillow just in time for Mother’s Day https://www.champagneandsugarplums.com/springtime-flower-pop-pillow-just-in-time-for-mothers-day/ Tue, 21 Apr 2020 23:49:22 +0000 http://192.168.0.28:8010/?p=938 The sun is shining, the snow is melting, the birds are singing and Mother’s Day is approaching. This year skip the bouquet and give flowers that will last. With bright, poppy colours this pillow inspires feelings of happiness and joy. Pro tip: you could also use a ready made pillow cover instead of making one if you have one on hand. A simple design of a few felt flowers with yarn stems – we fell in love with this sweet pillow and we hope you – and your mom – will too! This blog post may contain affiliate links. What does that mean? We may get a small commission if you make a purchase using our links, which helps us to keep posting new holiday content every week. What You’ll Need: Fabric for the pillow casing Felt in four colours Green yarn Decorative felt balls (or pom poms) Large eyed needle (like a darning or embroidery needle) Scissors Optional: Fabric Glue Sewing Machine Needle and thread Measure your fabric for the pillow casing. Be sure to leave room – at least 1/2″ all the way around – for a seam allowance. Stitch three sides closed with the forth left open enough that you can slip your pillow inside. Cut flowers out of the coloured felts. We made three different sizes in various shapes. You’ll need about twenty flowers to make your pillow. Arrange your cut flowers on the pillow case. When you like how it looks, start attaching the flowers with the method you have chosen, either put a couple of stitches in the centre of each flower, or a dab of fabric glue.  If you are sewing, make sure to secure your flowers with pins so you don’t lose your design. Work your away along the pillow until all the flowers are attached. Next, take the green yarn and thread a length onto the large eyed needle. Tie a knot in the end of the thread and start stitching the flowers stems starting from the inside of the casing. Tie another knot in the in the thread inside the casing to secure the flower stem. Sew stems for all the flowers. Insert your filling into the casing and stitch up the remaining opening. Happy Crafting! Made this for Mum last year? Certainly try a personalized Mason Jar filled with her favourite things or some pressed flowers picked by little hands.
