Introduce some Irish cheer into your home during this winter. We don’t know how much winter we can take, so it’s time to bring in some colour and cheer.  Luckily, this lucky signboard might just be enough to ward off those winter blues with traditional St. Patty’s green and a subtle rainbow touch. This blog post may contain affiliate links. What does that mean? We may get a small commission if you make a purchase using our links, which helps us to keep posting new holiday content every week. We painted our plank white, so the green would stand out better than would would against the natural wood. To give depth, we painted the plank green first and then a layer of white over-top. This way, we could sand away some of the white paint to give the sign a rustic, weathered look. There are a few ways to make the letters, free-hand like we did, stencils, or a Cricut machine. Let’s get sham-rockin and let greens, golds and rainbows dominate your decorations this March. What you’ll need: Wood plaque Scrapbook paper in green patterns Mod Podge and foam brush Scissors Ruler, stencil or Cricut machine Embroidery thread in a rainbow of colours Green and white acrylic paint Sandpaper Paint your plaque green. When this has completely dried, paint over the green with white paint. Be sure to let all of the paint layers dry completely before moving onto the next steps. If you don’t, the colours will smear together. After the white paint is dry, use the sandpaper to distress the plaque by rubbing away the white paint around the edges of the plaque. Cut out your letters while the paint layers dry. Use a stencil, Cricut machine or a ruler. Maybe try adding a second layer to add depth and flare. Use Mod Podge to attach the letters to the plaque. Seal them by applying a layer of the glue over the top of the letters as well. Cut lengths of various coloured embroidery thread or twine. Tie a knot in the middle and wrap them around one edge of the plaque, securing the threads at the back. What do you think of your lucky signboard? Day of the Dead Sugar Skulls Plaques for Halloween https://www.champagneandsugarplums.com/day-of-the-dead-sugar-skulls-plaques-for-halloween/ Mon, 06 Jul 2020 22:19:52 +0000 http://192.168.0.28:8010/?p=1434 Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead), the Mexican celebration of life is coming up on November 2. This holiday is marked by families celebrating the memory of their loved ones with dancing, costumes and eating sugar skull candies. Our Day of the Dead sugar skulls are so much fun make. This decoration works equally well for Halloween, a Day of the Dead party, or even a themed wedding. What You’ll Need: Two wooden plaques Two paper skulls Acrylic paints A felt mustache Mod Podge Foam brush Paint brushes White tulle Colourful small silk or ribbon flowers Glue gun and sticks Scissors Two sheets of scrapbook paper A bow tie Paint the edges of the plaques with the colour of your choice. Trace the shape of the plaque onto scrapbook paper and then cut out the tracing. Glue the paper onto the front of the plaques, using a layer of Mod Podge both under and on top of the paper to seal it. Paint the skulls completely white and then let dry. Decorate the sugar skulls. We suggest starting with the black and using it to blacken the eyes and nose. When you are happy with the designs, glue the skulls onto the plaques. Embellish the bride sugar skull with a flower tiara and tulle veil. To make the veil, cut three strips of tulle about six inches long and then glue in separate layers to the top of the skull, bunching the glued edge together to give the tulle volume. Painted Holiday Trees – With Glitter Twinkle Lights https://www.champagneandsugarplums.com/painted-holiday-trees-with-glitter-twinkle-lights/ Mon, 04 May 2020 23:00:10 +0000 http://192.168.0.28:8010/?p=1385 Now is the time to start putting up Christmas decorations, both inside and outside the house. Of course, we feel that every year needs a new addition. Who are we kidding, it’ll be more than one new addition, lol. After all, what’s Christmas without a little DIY??  The tricky thing is deciding what to make, so we’re here to bring you inspiration. This week we’re breaking out our paints for this naturally beautiful winter scene, with glitter as the cherry on top, which shimmers and shines to create the illusion of tiny glitter twinkle lights. We know glitter can be messy, but we promise, adding it is 100% worth it. What You’ll Need: Three wood boards or canvas Acrylic paint in white, blue and light and dark green Flat tipped paint brush Pointed tip paint brush Foam brush Mod Podge or white glue White/Translucent glitter Hot glue gun and sticks Pencil Sketch out a basic outline of the trees and snow, then start by painting the snow banks in with white paint. Paint in the trees, starting with light green paint. Make a thin line as the centre of your tree and then add tree branches by tapping the flat tipped brush onto the board. Be sure to tap the brush in different directions to vary the shapes and make the trees wider at the bottoms, thinning out as you get to the top. Paint over the light green paint with dark green to add dimension to the trees. Use the same dabbing technique with the white paint to add snow. Use blue paint to add shadows under the trees. To achieve a softer look, use water to thin the blue paint a little bit. Don’t be afraid to go over the blue with some water and white paint if the blue is too dark or too strong. Add some Mod Podge or white glue with the sponge on top of the snow on the trees. Dab glitter onto the wet glue, don’t be afraid to be generous with the glitter! Using the point tip brush make dots in the background for snowflakes. The glitter twinkle lights are ready to be added to your holiday decorations or given away as a gift, happy crafting! Retro Inspired Christmas Photo Transfer Decorations https://www.champagneandsugarplums.com/retro-inspired-christmas-photo-transfer-decorations/ Wed, 29 Apr 2020 21:46:13 +0000 http://192.168.0.28:8010/?p=1235 Remember Christmas in the 80’s? We do. After putting up all the tinsel, the multi-coloured shiny plastic stars and balls, and flipping through the toy section of the Sears Wish Book you settled in to watch your favourite Christmas special (which you had you catch when it was on or you missed it for that year!). The characters in these movies, and these retro inspired decorations, still give that warm, tingly feeling of nostalgia that gets us excited for the holidays. So we searched for some images and found four that were perfect. When you do this project, you can use any characters that mean something to you. You can also choose the number of plaques you want to do, we picked four – to hang in a line or stack up in a square. Quick tip: because of drying time, this project will take more than a day to complete. Whichever design you’ve chosen, let’s get started! What You’ll Need: –   Wood plaques–   A laser printed (not inkjet) photocopy of your picture–  Mod Podge photo transfer medium–  Foam brush–  Sandpaper–  Regular finish Mod Podge or other wood sealant Sand away any rough spots on the wood for better adhesion of the image. Then cover the front (its feels wrong, but it’s right) of your image with a generous, thick layer of the Mod Podge. If your picture has text on it, be sure to make a mirror image photocopy so that the words will appear in the right direction when flipped onto the wood. Lay the picture onto the wood plaque and press. Use a credit card to squeeze out any air bubbles and to make sure that the entire image is pressed tight to the board. Set this aside to dry for 24 hours. The next day…. Take a damp cloth and wet the entire image. Use your fingers or a soft rag to gently rub away the paper backing. Rub in light circles until the image begins to appears. You can rinse the board under water to help remove the paper bits that begin to rib off. Be careful not too over saturate the board though as this could cause it to warp. Let the board dry and repeat the process if there is any residue left behind. Cover the image with a layer of regular Mod Podge or a sealer of your choice. After this dries, you’re all done you’re amazing new retro inspired decorations, happy crafting! Colourful Tissue Paper Jewelry Box for Mother’s Day https://www.champagneandsugarplums.com/colourful-tissue-paper-jewelry-box/ Sun, 19 Apr 2020 23:58:32 +0000 https://www.champagneandsugarplums.com/?p=862 Our Mom’s jewelry box is where she keep all the trinkets and jewelry (although jewelry very loosely describes some of the pieces in there, lol) we have given her over the years. But like most mom’s, from macaroni bracelets to Plaster of Paris charms– she kept them all. And now with Christine’s little crew creating new treasures for Nanny, a new stash box is right on the money for our amazing mother.  Disclosure: Some of the links in this post are affiliate links. There may be a small commission made by our recommendations, and/or link to products or services mentioned on this website. Your purchase will help us continue to bring you amazing content, step-by-steps and product reviews. How to Make a Jewelry Box for Mother’s Day What you’ll need: Raw wood box Tissue paper Mod Podge glue Foam brush Acrylic paint Paint brush Hair rollers Paint the entire box white as a base layer. Cover the lower half of the box with a layer of Mod Podge, and then work on one side at a time as the glue tends to dry fairly quickly. When one side is covered , lay a strip of tissue paper and smooth down and then cover the tissue with another layer of Mod Podge to seal. Fold the edges of the tissue paper under the box and glue down to get clean edges. Use a very sharp knife to cut the tissue paper away from the clasp otherwise the paper could tear. Repeat the same steps on the top of the box, until it is covering the lid completely.  Pull the metal wire from inside the hair curlers and cut to fit tightly inside the box. Push the hair curlers into the jewelry box, pushing them against each other to create a tight fit. We added an open section for larger pieces by gluing a piece on wood to the sides and bottom of the box. We hope that you and your mom have a great day together and remember… life doesn’t come with a manual, it comes with a mother. Happy Crafting! Our Mom’s jewelry box is where she keep all the trinkets and jewelry (although jewelry very loosely describes some of the pieces in there, lol) we have given her over the years. But like most mom’s, from macaroni bracelets to Plaster of Paris charms– she kept them all. And now with Christine’s little crew creating new treasures for Nanny, a new stash box is right on the money for our amazing mother.

Paint the entire box white as a base layer.

Push the hair curlers into the jewelry box, pushing them against each other to create a tight fit. We added an open section for larger pieces by gluing a piece on wood to the sides and bottom of the box.

Amazing Mason Jar Gift Ideas All Mom’s will Love https://www.champagneandsugarplums.com/mason-jar-gift-ideas-for-any-mom/ Sun, 19 Apr 2020 22:53:52 +0000 https://www.champagneandsugarplums.com/?p=837 For many of us, Mother’s Day will be here next week, which still gives you plenty of time to create something special just for her.  With that in mind we’ve created some adorable mason jar gifts and we’re sure there’s one that every mom will love. Our Mom would definitely be the croquet jar! Each jar can be tweaked by you to make it extra special, after all you know your mom best, but here five ideas for inspiration. This blog post may contain affiliate links. What does that mean? We may get a small commission if you make a purchase using our links, which helps us to keep posting new holiday content every week. What you’ll need: A Mason Jar Ribbon Scrapbook paper Glue Lots of tiny gifts for Mom To get the jar ready, use the inner lid of the jar to trace a circle onto the scrapbook paper and cut it out, and then use some Mod Podge or glue to attach the paper circle to the lid and let dry. While the lid dries use your glue gun to attach the ribbon to the edge of the outer lid. Now that the jar is ready, let’s dive into contents.  We have four different jars that are themed to a specific hobby or interest: Baking, Spa, Crochet and Wine. If you have a mom who’s not in love with any of those, we have an Eclectic jar too.  This one has a bunch of fun, pretty and useful items that anyone would love!  Let’s check them out in detail… For those Moms who love baking, you can fill their jar with all things yummy.  Some other things your can sneak into this jar are chocolate chips, rolled oats or a favourite recipe card. Maybe your mom needs some pampering?  We think every mom does! Then this jar with everything she needs to relax in one spot is the perfect pick. You could also add candles, a sleep mask or her favourite facial scrub, mask or mosturizer. If your Mom loves to knit or crochet (like ours) this is the jar for her.  Other options are tapestry needles, stitch markers or a small paint brush roll to store all her hooks in. More gifts idea coming at you….. If your Moms hobby is drinking vino (tbh this is our speed, lol) then help her indulge with this jar made just for her.  You can also add some crackers, dried fruit or a small aerator.  Honestly, who can say no to cheese and wine?? Maybe your Mom doesn’t have a hobby or specific interest.  No problem – how about a collection of everyday, pretty and useful items?  You can put almost anything your Mom loves into this jar, as long as it fits through the top.  Think favourite stores, coffee, tea, candy and so much more! We hope these ideas were helpful and that you have an amazing Mother’s Day.  If your looking for more Mother’s Day gift ideas, check out our Springtime Flower Pop Pillow. Happy Crafting!
