We enlisted the help of our youngest Sugarplum, and Baby M not only had a ton of fun expressing his creativity, he practiced his fine motor skills and learned about different mediums and textures. We started with markers on coffee filters and then moved to paint on canvas, using brushes and fingers (and some toes!). The poppies are easy to make, and the whole project takes only a few basic craft materials.

What You’ll Need to Make Your Own Toddler Poppy Art

• Two coffee filters
• Red, orange and yellow water-based markers
• Spray bottle with water
• Scissors
• Glue
• Canvas
• Black, light and dark gray paint
• Paint brush
• Black pom pom

To begin, be sure to protect your floor or table by putting down a vinyl tablecloth or shower curtain. Then let your little one go wild with some water based markers – scribbling on the coffee filters in any way that suits.

Next – we did this without Baby M’s help, but older kids will love this step – use a spray bottle with water to cover the coffee filter. You don’t need too much water here, a little goes a long way. Set the coffee filter aside to dry.

Now it’s time for paint! Set out the paints and brushes and see what beautiful abstract pattern your little one creates. Let the canvas dry while moving back to the coffee filter.

Cut the dried coffee filter into petals of different sizes. You should get 8-10 petals from two coffee filters.

Add some glue to the tip of each petal – only use a small amount of glue as it can seep through the coffee filter if applies too thickly.

And then glue the petals onto the canvas, off centered a bit and about one third of the way up.

Paint a black stem and leaf under the poppy.

Paint a black circle in the middle of the poppy,

And then glue a pom pom on the black circle.
