This project would look equally nice using a white vase, so while you’re looking for materials at the local dollar store, keep in mind a white or clear vase will do.  The pattern used for this Mother’s Day craft is called a quatrefoil pattern and it’s perfect for this project because it’s symmetry is easy on the eyes, but again, you can use any pattern and colour you come across.

DIY Pottery Barn Inspired Dollar Tree Vase for Mother’s Day

What you’ll need:

• Clear or white vase
• Mod Podge
• Fabric
• Scissors 
• Sponge brush
• Accessory (a wooden ’S’ is used here)

How to make your own Pottery Barn Inspired Dollar Tree Vase:

Firstly, be sure your vase is clean, wash it with a mild cleaner and let it dry completely.  This will remove any finger prints, sticky labels and other things that will prevent the fabric from sticking to the glass.

Measure and cut your fabric.  Cut it long enough to wrap around the vase and wide enough to cover at least 1/2 to 3/4’s of the vase, length wise. 

Thirdly, apply the fabric to the vase using the sponge brush and Mod Podge, begin by applying a layer of glue along the bottom of the vase, it’s easier to do this in small sections, rolling the fabric out as you go, running your finger over the fabric to remove and bubbles or pockets of thicker glue.  Once again, set it aside to dry completely.

Once dry, flip the vase upside down and glue the extra length of fabric down onto the bottom of the vase.  Set it aside again to completely dry.  

Once the fabric has dried you can add your accessories, using the Mod Podge.

What You’ll Need:

• Iron-on transfer paper
• An inkjet printer
• Design template – get it here
• Iron
• Apron

Firstly, pick out an apron that you like. We found one at a local craft store, but you can find them at big box stores too.

Print the template onto the transfer paper. Make sure you pick the right paper for your apron colour. The transfer paper comes in packs for light or dark fabrics. We chose to make a black apron but this design would look great on white too. Follow the directions for printing on the package of the transfer sheets you bought. We used Jolee’s Boutique Easy Image and found them easy to use.

Tip: Be sure to trim the white paper away from around the design, otherwise there will be a big white square around the picture.

What You’ll Need:

• White cotton fabric at least 11” x 17”
• Iron on letters in two fonts
• Patterned fabric
• Small wooden or felt heart
• 11” x 17” frame
• Iron
• Double sided tape
• Glue
• Iron on fabric adhesive or fabric glue
• Paint brush
• Paint

Cut out all the letters that you’ll need to spell out Home, Is, Where, and Is in one font and Dad in the other font. Lay the letters out on the white cotton for spacing before you start ironing them in place.

When you are happy with the placement, follow the instructions of the iron on letters you bought. Most will ask you to cover the letters with a thin cloth and hold the iron on them for a few seconds. Iron on the letters one row at a time until the verse is complete.

Cut out a simplified map of Canada. You can print an online map to trace onto the fabric if you like, or free hand it. Don’t worry about following all the bumps and curves of the coastlines and don’t worry about cutting all the islands out. Large simple shapes work best for this design.

If you are using transfer paper, follow the instructions on the package. Use your iron to attach a large piece of transfer paper to the patterned map and then cut away the excess paper. If you are using fabric glue then use it now to attach the map to the art.

Almost done your DIY Father’s Day Art Frame!

Use the double-sided tape on the back board of your frame to attach the map piece.

Paint the wooden heart in the colour of your choice (we used yellow). Let dry. Glue the heart onto the map, place it in on the map where you Dad lives.
